Save the Sledding Hill and Green Space by Candy Cane Park

November 3, 2022

Dear Editor,

For those who may not be aware, Shepherd of the Hills Church has officially listed the land between their church and parsonage for sale. (Please see the Zillow link below.) As you can see from the aerial photo, the church property accounts for the majority of land that people in the community generally think of as Candy Cane Park. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/10th-Ave-1-New-Glarus-WI-53574/2061150285_zpid/

A group of current and former community members are working with a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to crowdfund enough money to purchase the land and keep it as green space. The intent would be to donate the property to the Village of New Glarus with the condition that it remain undeveloped and made an extension of Candy Cane Park, so that it can be enjoyed for many generations to come.

As a member of the Candy Cane neighborhood, we can attest to the daily use of this green space. Besides being the only community sledding hill in town that is very popular in the winter months, that space is utilized daily throughout the year by kids and adults alike for practicing sports like baseball, football, soccer, and golf. Others use it to fly kites, play Frisbee, ride bikes, practice their Usherette or Swiss Miss dance routines, or even just roll down the hill. Others have used it for family picnics and star gazing on a beautiful evening.

While we are not able to accept donations yet, we are actively seeking pledges from the community. Please join us in supporting this worthwhile effort by pledging your support today online at https://www.newglaruscares.com and attending the New Glarus Park & Recreation Committee meeting on November 9th, at 7:00 p.m. Together we can preserve this important green space before it’s lost forever!

Daniel and Heather Blewett,

New Glarus
