Schmalbeck Appreciates Local History

April 19, 2018

Dear Editor,

Thanks to Kim Tschudy for the historical article on World War II. Here in the Heart of Green County, we are very fortunate to have people who research history, log it and share it with us through the Post Messenger Recorder and various other means.

In March, one of Monticello’s most ardent historians, Barbara Green, passed away. Barb did much of the research for the publication of Monticello Past & Present. It was compiled in 1976, in honor of America’s 200th Anniversary and printed the following year. Barb was one of the 18 people who founded The Monticello Area Historical Society. When Ruth Sybers donated Woelffer’s Drug Store to the society, Barb and her husband, Bernie, worked diligently, along with many other devoted members, to develop a museum. Barb’s efforts continued through the years as she served as a docent.

Another thank you should be given to you, Editor Sue Moen, for your great photography. Your front-page photos comparing April 2017 and 2018 in New Glarus are among many you’ve shared with your readers denoting various glimpses of history.

Sincerely,

Marlene Schmalbeck,

Monticello
