Fransen Endorses Green County Board Candidates

March 29, 2018

Dear Editor,

We used to live in Belleville and about 13 years ago we moved to Exeter Township, north of Dayton. You take some things for granted when you live in a village—things like safe and clean water. Now we have our own well and septic system. Last year we tested our water and everything was fine but not everyone in Green County can say the same. In a water test, nitrate contamination is one of the first things you test for that can cause “blue baby syndrome” and there are other pollutants to test for and they are Coliform bacteria and E coli.  This morning we learned that Wisconsin ranks among the 12 worst states for drinking water safety.

We look at the problems in Kewaunee County (greater than 34 percent of their well water is undrinkable) and we fear the future. We don’t want to drill a second well or third well, and in the livestock sitting meetings we learned even a new deeper well may not be the fix. We certainly don’t want brown water coming out of our faucets like some folks in Kewaunee County.

Outside of Brodhead there is a huge CAFO manure factory under construction by an out-of-state businessman and his investors. The fee for a CAFO permit is almost nothing compared to what it will cost the taxpayers of Green County in the years ahead.

We, Green County, need to protect our water and save family farms.

That’s why I support the reelection of Erica Roth and Betty Grotophorst to the Green County Board. They are on top of things in Green Co. I also support electing new members Harry Pulliam and Beth Robinson to the board. I want a proactive board that looks out for Green County taxpayers.

Phil Fransen,

Belleville
