Names Released in Fatal Accident

June 8, 2017

On Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at 6:28 a.m., Green County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Monticello Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 69 near Gutzmer Road, in the Town of Washington.

It was discovered that a southbound motorcycle, ridden by Alvin J. Thomas, 54, Mount Horeb, had collided with a northbound semi-tanker driven by Randall A. Sager, 56, Rock City, IL. Thomas was ejected from his motorcycle and the tanker overturned, spilling nearly 6,000 gallons of whey into the ditch. Sager required extrication and was transported to the hospital by Green County EMS with non-life threatening injuries. Thomas sustained massive trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Green County Coroner’s Office.

Highway 69 was detoured for five and a half hours to facilitate investigation and removal of the semi-tanker.

Initial Sheriff’s Office reports indicate that the motorcycle drifted across the centerline while rounding a curve and into the path of the oncoming semi. There was no indication of any impaired operation or excessive speed. The collision remains under investigation. The Wisconsin State Patrol Crash Reconstruction Unit and Green County Highway Department assisted at the scene.

This is Green County’s second fatal collision and its fourth fatality.

Authorized by Sheriff Mark A. Rohloff
