Big Money in Politics: United to Amend Meeting with the New Glarus Village Board

Dear Editor,

At 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, June 7, Green County United to Amend will attend a regular meeting of the New Glarus Village Board. The meeting will take place in the Village Hall, 319 2nd Street, New Glarus. At that meeting we will ask the Board to place a referendum on the November ballot, asking Village residents to weigh in on money in politics. We will propose that the ballot question be:

“Shall the Village of New Glarus, Wisconsin, adopt the following resolution?

Resolved, that “We the People” of the Village of New Glarus, Wisconsin, seek to reclaim democracy from the expansion of corporate personhood rights and the corrupting influence of unregulated political contributions and spending. We stand with communities across the country to support passage of an amendment to the United States Constitution stating:

Only human beings ─ not corporations, unions, non-profits or similar associations ─ are endowed with constitutional rights, and

Money is not speech, and therefore regulating political contributions and spending is not equivalent to limiting political speech.

Further Resolved that the Village of New Glarus, Wisconsin, Clerk is directed to forward a copy of this resolution to our state and federal representatives with instructions to enact resolutions and legislation to advance this effort.”

Why are we doing all this? It’s because big money in politics is ruining our country. Our economy and the social fabric of our nation are unraveling, all for the benefit of a few wealthy donors—individuals, multinational corporations and possibly even foreign governments—who contribute vast sums to our political campaigns. This is affecting all of us, particularly working people and local governments. As an example, the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau reports that over the last three legislative sessions, the Wisconsin Legislature enacted more than 100 provisions that represent unfunded mandates or restrict the decision-making power of local bodies.

We need to take a stand. Come to the Village Hall on June 7th. Help ensure that New Glarus joins the 75 Wisconsin communities (and over 700 nationwide) that have passed similar resolutions. For more info, please call me, Harry Pulliam, at (608) 527-3325.

Harry Pulliam,

New Glarus
