Everyone is invited to Karlfest 2015

Dear Editor,

In a community that loves music and loves to gather to celebrate music, please join in for Karlfest on Sunday, August 16, 2015, at the 1:00 p.m., at the historic Schutzenhaus (Shooting Barn) just north of the village of New Glarus.

New Glarus Vision sponsors this event to celebrate the legacy of Karl Gmur’s love of music. Karl played for more than 30 years with the Roger Bright Band, but actually started playing Polka music with Russ Wilson’s Orchestra. Karl also played with Grant Kozera at Puempel’s creating “Another Memorable Occasion” at various festivals. He also enjoyed playing with Down From the Hills, a bluegrass band. Who knows who will show up to share their music? Bring an instrument or simply come and enjoy the friendship.

Karlfest will start at 1:00 p.m. Beer will be provided, and you’re welcome to bring along whatever you’d like to drink, share, eat!

See you there!

Kaye Gmur, Monika and Bobby Pernot, Bill and Lynnette Gmur, and in spirit, Kris and Teresa Gmur, plus families!

Thank you from New Glarus Historical Society

Dear Editor,

On Thursday, August 6th, our New Glarus Historical Society hosted the annual Capital Region meeting for the Wisconsin Council for Local History and Wisconsin Historical Society. Fifty-five people attended this meeting – they represented twenty historical societies/ historic organizations and fourteen communities in south central Wisconsin.

The day consisted of several informational sessions, small group discussions, and tours of both the Swiss Historical Village & Museum (http://www.swisshistoricalvillage.org/) and the Chalet of the Golden Fleece (www.newglarusvillage.com/recreation/chalet-of-the-golden-fleece).

Many thanks to:

Duane Freitag and Kim Tschudy for sharing their expertise on writing and publishing local history during the day

the management and staff of the Chalet Landhaus, the location for our meeting

Sandy Blum and Mary Statz for providing tours of the Chalet of the Golden Fleece

the members of our New Glarus Historical Society who helped in so many ways during the day

And finally, a huge thank you to all the volunteers in our communities who preserve, protect, and promote our local history. As author and poet Robert Penn Warren once observed: “History cannot give us a program for the future, but it can give us a fuller understanding of ourselves, and of our common humanity, so that we can better face the future.”

Denise Anton Wright,

New Glarus Historical Society Board Member
