Support Team Ruby Red to Beat Blood Cancer

Fat Cat Coffee Works fundraising event included

April 29, 2021

Through June 5, you can help Team Ruby Red raise funds to beat cancer. Events include Cupcakes for the Cause, sponsored by Fat Cat Coffee Works in New Glarus.

The team is vying in the national Man & Woman of the Year (MWOY) fundraising campaign for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Late in 2020, New Glarus resident and business owner Jacqueline Gleason was moved to action when she learned about the struggles of a new hire whose son had been diagnosed with a rapidly progressing type of juvenile leukemia in 2019.

“People don’t know the early warning signs – the disease only lasts a matter of weeks. They were blindsided, and they nearly lost him,” she says.

Today, 17-year-old Ulysses Kovach is now halfway through a three-year intensive protocol that includes treatments developed with LLS funding. LLS has also helped the family with monetary grants.

Jacqueline enlisted family, friends and business associates to start Team Ruby Red.

“We chose a name that evokes robust health – something brilliant and beautiful.” Through the years, LLS has raised over a billion dollars through campaigns like Team Ruby Red’s.

Team Ruby Red includes Ulysses himself, along with his mother, Vesna Kovach. “Every three seconds, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer,” she says. “It turns out most modern forms of cancer care began with blood cancer research.”

Fat Cat Coffee Works in New Glarus will be baking up a special set of cupcakes that you can pre-order from April 27-May 4, for pickup curbside on Saturday, May 8th, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. “It’s the perfect something special for Mother’s Day or something sweet for yourself,” says Jacqueline.

Follow our events at pages.lls.org/mwoy/wi/madison21/jgleason, where you can also make a direct contribution through June 5. “Even ten dollars,” Jacqueline stresses. “It all adds up.” Call (608) 217-1613 or email jgleason@bestversionmedia.com to learn more.
