Monroe Woman is Green County's Fifth Fatality of the Year

On Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at about 2:06 p.m., the Green County Dispatch Center took a 911 call of a two-vehicle crash in Sylvester Township. The Juda Fire Department, Monroe EMS, Green County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol and the University of Wisconsin MedFlight responded to State Highway 11/81, .1 of a mile west of Hartwig Road.
The investigation revealed that a 2006 Mitsubishi truck operated by Jeffery Knutson, 52, Janesville, was traveling east on STH 11/81. The truck traveled across the center line and struck a westbound car. The westbound car, a 2013 Honda Fit, was operated by Elena Kauffman, 55, Monroe.
Kauffman sustained massive trauma and pronounced deceased at the scene by the UW MedFlight Doctor and the Green County Coroner’s Office.
Knutson was transported to the Monroe Clinic Hospital for minor injuries. Knutson was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, it is unknown if the truck was equipped with an airbag. Kauffman was wearing a seatbelt and her car’s airbag deployed.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
The investigation of this crash is continuing at the time of this press release. This is Green County’s third fatal collision and its fifth fatality.
