American Diabetes Association Alert Day

According to the CDC, almost 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, or 9.3% of the population!  While an estimated 21 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 86 million have pre-diabetes. The estimated total of direct and indirect costs for this disease is 245 billion dollars.

Diabetes Alert Day, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, is held every fourth Tuesday in March. It is a one-day “wake-up call” asking the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. This disease is increasing by large numbers yearly, the Wisconsin Lions Foundation and the Monticello Lions and Lioness Clubs are promoting Diabetes Alert Day throughout Wisconsin.

The Diabetes Alert Day event will be held on March 28, 2017, at Gempeler’s Supermarket in Monticello from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lions and Lioness will hand out brochures with valuable information.  Also, on February 23rd, the Monticello School is hosting a Wellness and Health Fair from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., in the Rhemstedt Gym. The Monticello Lions and Lioness will have a booth distributing brochures about diabetes, along with other handouts.

The entire month of March, the Lions and Lionesses will have a window display about diabetes at the Historical Museum. If you have any other questions, please contact Nancy Elmer, Diabetes Chairperson.
