Call for Artists
The New Glarus Retirement Campus, located in New Glarus, in the rolling hills of southern Wisconsin, serving almost 200 residents, is in the process of a nursing home expansion, adding a Rehabilitation Center with 48 additional beds. Along with this project, the entire skilled nursing home will be remodeled to create a more home-like atmosphere for our residents.
As part of this process, we are asking local artists to donate works of art that will be placed throughout the Rehabilitation Center, the Nursing Home and the Assisted Living Facility.
Art, especially for our residents, helps create a beautiful and comfortable environment. Art stimulates memories and brings joy and inspiration. It is our hope that your donation of artwork to the Home that is reminiscent of life in south-central Wisconsin, will benefit our residents, who will have joy and inspiration from your works of art as they traverse the halls of the Home each day.
We are looking for paintings and other works of art, along with photographs, quilts, murals, stained glass and other artifacts using wood, stone, glass and other materials that reflect the life and culture here in south-central Wisconsin. Your donation of your artistic skills will help the residents to be surrounded in beauty and have images that bring back all the good memories of living in south-central Wisconsin.
The artwork must meet the following specifications so that they can be hung safely on the walls and at the same time meet the state codes that require that nothing obstruct the hallways. The New Glarus Home will provide the framing and also the matting (when matting is required or recommended by the artist).
Artwork Sizes
For small sized artwork, a size of 18” by 18” is recommended. Medium sized artwork can be 24” by 24” to 24” by 36”. Large sized artwork is considered 36” square and larger. Artwork should be no more than 3” in depth. Three-dimensional artwork could be at a maximum of 4” in depth. The Home will require a variety of sizes of artwork throughout the facility.
Framing and Matting to be Provided by the Home
Frames will be of silver finish on wood molding. Molding will be approximately 1 1/4” wide as a minimum for small sized artwork, approximately 2” wide for medium sized artwork, and approximately 3” wide for large sized artwork. Framed artwork to include single matte, soft white in color. Large sized artwork will require oversized mattes. Framed artwork in small or medium size to have regular, clear glass. Large artwork to have 1/8” plexi-glass. Hanging devices for artwork to be non-locking hardware installation. Artwork locations to be determined with owner/interior designer.
With the many wings, community rooms and dining areas, we are hoping to gather about 100 works of art to display. We have a plan to rotate these works of art at least annually so that all residents in various wings (“neighborhoods”) will sell all of the art over a period of time.
We started our “art acquisition” program on November 7, 2016, and hope to have all art ready to display when all building and remodeling is completed around April 30, 2017. If you would like to donate paintings, photographs, quilts and other works of art, please email your intention to do so to artatnewglarushome@gmail.com, including your name, address, city, state, zip code, email address, telephone number and a brief description of the type of art you intend to donate. You will then receive an acknowledgement of your intent to donate, along with further information.
