New Glarus Competes in Math 24 Tournament
The New Glarus Middle School Math Team participated in the Math 24 Tournament, hosted by the University of Wisconsin – Madison, on March 12. Nine students from each grade, 4th-8th, competed in the annual event against 231 students from nine area schools. The 4th and 5th graders competed in the morning, while 6th, 7th and 8th graders competed in the afternoon. Trophies for top scores were awarded to Ben Lukszys, 4th place in 5th grade, Nathan Streiff, 4th place in 6th grade, Owen Odegard for 4th place and Adam Nelson for 6th place in 7th grade, and Emily Streiff for 1st place and Haiden Zimmerman for 4th place in 8th grade. Well done, Mathletes!
A group of high school students volunteered to work as proctors for the competitions. When not competing, the students were treated to tours led by professors and graduate students at the Genetics BioTechnology Center, the Space Science and Engineering Center, and the Primate Research Center. Alayna Truttmann, Rachel Craven and Makayla Kiersten, 2014 New Glarus High School graduates currently attending UW-Madison, joined the group to talk about college classes, time management and study strategies, cafeteria food and dorm life. The high school students were also taken on guided walking tours of the campus.
Participants were 4th graders Keatan Zimmerman, Annelisa Smith, Jessy Ruckman, Jack Parkinson, Alayna Lewis, Roman Kendrick, Kayden Dopp, and team top scorer, Knolan Kemp. 5th graders Carter Siegenthaler, Austin Nimtz, Beckett Malaise, Dayna Karls, Analise Fuller, Tyler Durst, Maddie Deegan, Levi Belknap, and team top scorer, Ben Lukszys. 6th graders Leah Zierl, Alexa Thayer, Ty Ready, Connor Piper, Sara McNulty, Jackson Julien, Merrick Fong, Desi Delforge, and team top scorer, Nathan Streiff. 7th graders Matthew Zierl, Ryan Winder, Connor Siegenthaler, Adam Nelson, Jeremy Kolasa, Garrett James, Ethan Gray, Rob Chenoweth, and team top scorer, Owen Odegard. 8th graders Haiden Zimmerman, Tessa Sheridan, Karstyn Rossing, Annalee Kaiser, Chris George, Milo Hoesly, Ellawyn Fong, Patrick Craker and team top scorer, Emily Streiff.
The New Glarus Middle School Math Team held practice sessions weekly from November through March to improve their mental math skills. They were coached by Shari Krueger, Warren Howard and Debra Zimmerman. Their hard work paid off and the entire team made a strong showing at this event.
