In the Family and Consumer Sciences classroom at New Glarus High School, students in the Family, Food and Society course entered into a state-wide cooking competition through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as their final project in class. The culinary competition is called Whipping Up Wellness and is a competition where teams of middle and high school students were invited to develop a nutritious, student-friendly recipe that can be incorporated easily into the school food service program and used at home. The top five finalists from the Recipe Contest were invited to prepare their recipe during the Cooking Competition at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Thursday, May 17, 2018. Dishes were judged on taste, student appeal, presentation, and creativity. The five finalists from the Cooking Competition received a banner to display at their school and recognition on the Department of Public Instruction website. Over 100 recipes were submitted state-wide.
Four New Glarus High School Family and Consumer Sciences students were selected as one of the top five finalist team for the culinary competition, and were invited to the Culinary Cook-Off. Hailey Zuber, Abby Marty, Jaliyha Shanklin and Alexa Thayer were selected with their homemade Very Veggie Lasagna recipe. They competed at UW-Madison at Babcock Hall against four other teams and were evaluated by five judges. Recipes from the contest will be published in the 2018 Whipping Up Wellness Cookbook.
Three other New Glarus High School teams submitted recipes that will also be featured in the 2018 Whipping Up Wellness Cookbook. These teams were Justin Palmer, Sierra Marselle, Brelle Collins and Katie Dunham with their Turkey Quinoa Bowl with Kale Chips, Hailey Jones, Owen Odegard, Michael Janssen and Justis Johnson with their Inside Out Taco, and Francesca Schiro, Ashley Mcginnis and Alivia Palmer with their Bacon Broccoli Pasta.
