New Glarus Mathletes Triumph

Shari Krueger

The 5th and 6th grade math team.

The New Glarus Middle School Math Team competed at the Regional Archimedes Math Meets in Lake Mills at the end of March.  New Glarus sent two teams of eight students from grades 5-8 to the competitions.  The New Glarus teams competed against seven other teams from area schools, with the top two teams earning eligibility to move on to the Mega Math Meets, where they compete against schools from across southern Wisconsin.

New Glarus did very well, with one team from the 7th and 8th grades earning first place and one team from the 5th and 6th grades earning second place.  Both of these teams will go on to the Mega Math Meets in May.  For the 8th graders Ellawyn Fong, Milo Hoesly, Haiden Zimmerman and Emily Streiff, this is their third trip to the Mega Math Meet, having also gone in 2012 and 2013.

The New Glarus Knights 7th/8th grade team, consisting of Milo Hoesly, Emily Streiff, Ellawyn Fong, Haiden Zimmerman, Jeremy Kolasa, Ethan Gray, Adam Nelson and Owen Odegard, took first place as a team.  In individual scoring, Ellawyn Fong tied for first place, but lost the tie-breaker by one point and ended up with second place.  Emily Streiff took fourth place, and Adam Nelson earned fifth place.  The Glarner Knights 7th/8th grade team, consisting of Patrick Craker, Tessa Sheridan, Chris George, Karstyn Rossing, Matthew Zierl, Garrett James, Ryan Winder and Connor Siegenthaler, also performed well.

The Glarner Knights 5th/6th grade team, consisting of Merrick Fong, Nathan Streiff, Ben Wolf, Desi Delforge, Ben Lukszys, Dayna Karls, Austin Nimtz and Tyler Durst, took second place as a team in their division.  In individual scoring, Ben Wolf earned second place, Nathan Streiff took third place, and Merrick Fong earned fifth place.  The New Glarus Knights 5th/6th grade team, consisting of Sara McNulty, Jackson Julien, Ty Ready, Richie Sawyer, Levi Belknap, Maddie Deegan, Aden Gobeli and Carter Siegenthaler, also did well.

The New Glarus Math Teams practiced at weekly hour-long after-school sessions from November through March with their coaches, Shari Krueger, Warren Howard and Debra Zimmerman.  Their hard work and preparation resulted in an excellent performance.  Excellent work, mathletes!
