Knights Ride Ponies to Easy Win
December 22, 2022
Tues. Dec. 13: Rivalry games are usually hallmarked by that “throw-the-book-out-the-window” kind of electricity. In that regard, it’s safe to say this game was wanting, as New Glarus cruised/coasted to an easy 76-30 victory over the visiting Ponies. Such are the vicissitudes of small town athletics where the gleaning process of graduation can all but eviscerate a team.
Both teams entered the contest as defending champions of their respective conferences (NG - Capitol South; Monticello - Six Rivers East) and with similar records, desperately in need of a win. And that’s where the similarities came to an end, as the Knights were simply too much for the overmatched Ponies.
NG’s A.C. Strok took the opening tip-off and scored quickly on a driving layup with a foul. Before the patrons were into their second handful of popcorn, NG was up 13-0. The Ponies came back to close the gap at 20-7 when senior Jackson Eyler provided a spark with a drive and a foul. But when the “one” of his “and-one” clanked off the rim it was all NG as they raced to a 46-13 halftime lead.
The highlight of the first half on this, Parent’s Night, was provided by the Knight’s senior reserve guard Emery Johnson when he entered the game at the 2:27 mark. Johnson, the diminutive dynamo, brought his fearless energy straight from the gridiron as he drove the interior of the Pony defense, scoring 7 straight unanswered points, delivering the knockout punch. With his team taking a 33-point lead to the locker room it was game over.
The second half started exactly like the first as A.C. Strok again scored quickly on a driving layup. Mercifully, the WIAA “40-Point Rule” was soon imposed allowing the clock to run without interruption.
A.C. Strok led all players with 17 points as all players on the Knights team would see action in this bench-clearing contest. Junior Ryer Indergrand would lead Monticello with 12 points, with only four Ponies registering in the scoring column.
To the Monticello faithful, a reminder that this is only a phase (and only one game). One has to travel to Indiana to find a town as basketball-centric. The worm always turns. Pony Pride and the ghosts of John Ponyicsanyi and Elmer Lemon will insure it. Promise.
