Melissa Trumpy, Still Missing After One Year

November 3, 2022

On October 26, 2021, Melissa Trumpy went missing. Despite efforts of family, friends, law enforcement and hundreds of volunteers, she has not been found. Although her family does not believe that she is still alive, they are desperately continuing the search for her.

Authorities originally said that Trumpy was last seen in Monroe, WI. There have been reports that she was seen later at the home of Derek Hammer in Shannon, IL.

Although no one has been officially named as a person of interest in the case, Trumpy's family believes that Hammer may have had something to do with her disappearance. Melissa's vehicle was found on Bolton Road, near Freeport, IL, just a few miles from where authorities say Hammer's father was killed in 2008.

Jeffrey W. Hammer, 49, of Shannon, was killed on September 27, 2008, after being hit by two vehicles near the intersection of Bolton Road and Hershey Road, in rural Shannon. Police tried to locate the driver of the first vehicle, which struck Hammer and then fled the scene. The accident occurred at around 1:13 a.m. Jeffrey Hammer was reportedly walking south on, or adjacent to, the roadway when he was struck by a northbound vehicle. This vehicle reportedly fled the scene and Hammer was left lying in the road.

Sometime later, he was struck by a second northbound vehicle. The driver of this vehicle stayed with the victim at the scene and contacted authorities. Investigators believe the first vehicle impact caused enough damage to kill Jeffrey, but it's not clear whether he was still breathing.

Derek Hammer is currently in the Green County Jail awaiting trial on a number of charges involving drugs, weapons and domestic violence.

Prison records in Nevada show that Hammer was sentenced in 2018 to 35 to 108 months behind bars for Battery by Strangulation and Possession of an Explosive Device. He was credited with 642 days time served, and was granted parole after four months.

Anyone with any information on the disappearance of Melissa Trumpy is asked to please call the Green County Wisconsin Sheriff's Office at (608) 328-9400 or the Carroll County Illinois Crime Stoppers at 815-244-STOP (7867). Your information will remain anonymous and could earn you a cash reward.
