Wildcats Advance in Playoffs

Kaden DeSmet gets congratulations from teammates after scoring the tie-breaking touchdown with 41 seconds left in the game.

On Friday night, the #3 seeded Belleville Wildcats hosted a Division 6 WIAA Football play-off game against #6 seeded Westby. Leading at the half, 20-12, Belleville squeaked out a win in the final seconds of the game. The final score was Belleville 27, Westby 20.

The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first, on a run by Aidan Keyes for 6. Jake Fahey's extra point was good. With less than 2 minutes left in the quarter, Westby answered back with 6 points of their own. Keyes found Kaden DeSmet in the second quarter for 6, with Fahey's extra point successful. Keyes hit DeMarcus Conner late in the quarter for another score, with Fahey's extra point attempt missing the mark. Westby closed out the half with a touchdown.

No one scored in the third quarter. Westby tied it up at 20 each in the fourth with a touchdown and successful 2-point conversion. With 41 seconds remaining in the game, Keyes found DeSmet for 6 and Fahey kicked the extra point to win the game.

Aidan Keyes went 21 for 41 at QB, with 225 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Leading the Wildcats in rushing yards was Logan Derke with 99, while DeMarcus Conner had 14 and Andrew Ace had 2.

DeMarcus Conner led Belleville with 132 receiving yards, while Kaden DeSmet had 50, Andrew Ace had 38 and Logan Derke had 5.

On defense, Landry Yarbough and Logan Derke each had 4 tackles, while Jake Fahey, Brady Durni and Devin Gratz had 3, and Ryker Swenson had 2.

Belleville will play at #2 Darlington in round two of the playoffs. If you recall, Darlington dealt the Wildcats their only loss of the season earlier this month. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m., on Friday October 28th. The winner advances to play the winner of the #1 Kenosha St. Joseph vs #5 Lancaster game on November 4th.
