Sugar River Euchre
March 17, 2022
The Sugar River Euchre League’s 91st regular season came to a close on Thursday, March 10th, with less drama than anticipated. By streaking past the Kleeman’s Hay Shakers with 6 extra points, the Express abolished any chances for a four-way tie for first place. The win advances the Express to the championship match for the fourth straight season. However Kleeman’s, the first half winners, will get their shot at revenge in this match. The date, time and place of the championship match will be determined at the Spring Tournament.
The Pranksters, with a 10-point win over the Pipe Benders, put themselves into position for a tie for first place. But the win by the Express quickly squashed that idea. Instead, the Pranksters finished in sole possession of 2nd place.
For the second week in a row, the Trolls scared even themselves. They crawled out from under the bridge on March 3rd when they defeated the Hay Shakers. The Trolls apparently enjoyed the light of day as this week they outscored the River Rats by 5, giving them their 3rd win of the season. Honker and Jimmy Gehin did all they could for the J&M River Rats by escaping with 116 lbs of cheese.
With their 32-point win over the Mounties, the Cowboys stayed above 500 for the half. Harold Schlimgen and Pete Waltz corralled 111 Mounties, while Don Field and Steve Dower encircled another 118. Tom Magnuson and Mary Humphrey kept Don and Steve from catching their limit in the 7th frame.
The 111 points raked in by Shufflers Dave Herfel and Randy Skogen was quickly off-set by Cheese Eaters Kendal Wenger and Bryan Buesser’s 111 points. Unfortunately for the Shufflers, no Cheese Eaters matched the 77 attained by Erik Massey and Derek Skogen, this week’s low score. The Cheese Eaters secured 33 more lbs of cheese than the Shufflers.
Standings: Express 8-1; Pranksters 7-2; Hay Shakers 6-3; Mounties 6-3; Cowboys 5-4; Cheese Eaters 4-5; Shufflers 3-6; Pipe Benders 2-7; River Rats 2-7; Trolls 2-7.
