Belleville Girls Basketball Celebrates Senior Night and Continues Their Push for Conference Title

February 17, 2022

On Tuesday, February 8th, the Wildcats traveled to Marshall to take on the Cardinals and continue their push for the Capital South Conference Title.

The game saw a lot of energy from both teams from the start, and the Wildcats were able to take a 28-26 lead into the locker room at the half. The second half saw much of that same energy with the teams exchanging the lead throughout the half, but unfortunately for the Wildcats, the much-improved Marshall Cardinals were able to come away with a final 63-59 win over Belleville.

Belleville was led in scoring by Alyssa Caskey’s 18 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block, Callie Smith’s 14 points, 18 rebounds and 1 block, and Ava Foley’s 12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

And then on Friday, February 11th, Belleville welcomed the Waterloo Pirates and this was also Senior Night for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats came out with a renewed energy this game and scored their first points within a couple of seconds of the start of the game. Belleville continued on with this renewed fire and had built an impressive 53-25 lead over the Pirates by the end of the first half. The second half saw more of the same with the girls feeding off the energy from the Pep Band and student section, which allowed them to continue to play their smothering defense and held Waterloo to only scoring 11 points in the second half, allowing the Wildcats to walk away with an impressive 82-36 victory.

The night saw the Wildcats have a very balanced scoring attack with nine of their players scoring. They were led by Callie Smith’s 22 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks, Mickey Stampfl’s 12 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals, and 1 block, Alyssa Caskey’s 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals, Lainey Winker’s 9 points, 1 rebound, and 3 steals, Maddi DeSmet’s 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists, Addison Edge’s 7 points, Ava Foley’s 6 points, Kenna Edge’s 3 points, and Ellie Doyle with 2 points for the Wildcats.

After the game, the program celebrated their seniors with Coach Pharo talking about the seniors and presenting them with a plaque and the underclassman performing their traditional senior night dance and presentation of gifts.

Belleville wraps up their regular season action this week by traveling to Cambridge on Monday, February 14th, then back home against Columbus on Tuesday, February 15th, and will finish on the road against Wisconsin Heights on Thursday, February 17th.
