NGHS Welcomes New Athletic Director

January 13, 2022

New Glarus High School has a new Athletic Director, Mr. Mitchell Cernek (pronounced "Sir-nek"). He takes over the position formerly held for 11+ years by Brittany Spencer-Grant, who moved to a similar position at Oregon High School this past October. In addition to his A.D. duties, he is also a teacher of Physical Education and Health Studies.

Mitchell is a 2010 graduate of Clinton High School where he was a three sport athlete (football, basketball, and baseball). He attended Greenville University in southern Illinois, graduating in 2014 where he was particularly well decorated in baseball. After graduation from college he spent time in Mt. Vernon, IL, La Crosse, WI, and Baltimore, MD, furthering his experience in coaching basketball and baseball as well as teaching. Each summer since 2014, he has worked at Camp Skylemar in Maine, a summer boys sports camp.

In 2018, he moved back to Wisconsin and worked as the A.D. for the Wauzeka-Steuben school district, presenting an opportunity to be closer to family.

He is faced with immediate challenges: finding a new Head Football Coach; COVID issues with scheduling concerns for all the sports at present; arranging for officials at games; etc. He has also expressed an interest in recruiting more boys from Monticello to join the NGM football program.

Outside of his professional duties he enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with family and girlfriend (whose identity remains cloaked in mystery). A dedicated and lifelong Badgers fan, his favorite professional athlete is Russell Wilson.

If you have attended any of the boys and girls basketball games in New Glarus you have, no doubt, noticed him working the clock at the scorer's table. With his engaging personality and indefatigable energy, Mitchell has become an instant hit with students, staff, and faculty alike.

Welcome, Mitchell!
