Katelyn Eyler got the 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Ponies 41-40 win over Parkview.

On Monday, November 29th, the Monticello Ponies girls varsity basketball team won a thriller against the Parkview Vikings. Up 26-21 at the half, the Ponies scored a 3-pointer at the buzzer to win by 1-point, 41-40.

The Ponies led most of the game, but the Vikings came back in the second half and took the lead. With around 35 seconds left in the game, Parkview was leading by 2.

"Ellie Gustafson went to the line and made both free throws to tie the game 38-38. Parkview got a steal and went on a fast break. The girl missed the layup, but Dalana Trumpy fouled her. It was her 5th foul of the game," explained Coach Lori Brokopp. "I substituted Katelyn Eyler in the game for her. The Parkview girl made both free throws and now they were up 40-38. We had about 16 seconds to go the full length of the court and get a shot off. With our point guard now out of the game, I put the ball in Ellie Gustafson's hands. She dribbled up, getting double teamed but she got a screen from Sarah Brokopp and then a second screen from Karlee Wilkins. Ellie was still getting guarded heavily and she saw Katelyn Eyler set up on the right wing. Ellie made a great pass and Katelyn shot a 3-pointer. It went in as the buzzer sounded."

Leading the team with 17 points was Dalana Trumpy, while Ellie Gustafson scored 9 points, Katelyn Eyler put 6 on the board, Karlee Wilkins scored 5 points and Jaden Zuber scored 4 points.

On Friday, December 3rd, the Lady Ponies traveled to Pecatonica. Pec took an early lead and by halftime, Monticello was down by 10.

"Their lead grew even more right after the half. We then went on a run and fought back to within 5," said Coach Brokopp. "Pec did a nice job entering the ball into their post and hit some key outside shots as well. They made some FF at the end to secure their win as well. We had over 20 turnovers and just need to do a better job taking care of the ball."

The final score was Pecatonica 48, Monticello 37.

Ellie Gustafson scored 14 points to lead Monticello in scoring, while Dalana Trumpy scored 13 points, Katelyn Eyler put 8 on the board and Jaden Zuber scored 2 points.

On December 9th, Monticello will play at Juda, then they will travel to Cambria-Friesland on December 11th and will play at Black Hawk on December 17th.
