The Monticello School Board adopted resolutions to hold a referendum on April 5, 2022.

According to the school district and the hand out provided, the referendum would ask voter permission to exceed the revenue limit and provide funding for the 2022-2023 budget year and beyond. The revenue limit is a State law imposed on all Wisconsin school districts in 1993, and limits the amount of revenues a district receives to pay operating budget expenses.

In 2014, voters approved a referendum to exceed the revenue limit which provided this funding for eight years and expired with the current 2021-2022 budget. To continue this revenue for next budget year, the District is required to ask voters permission to exceed the revenue limit with an operational referendum in 2022.

The 2022 Referendum will provide revenue to continue the 2014 Referendum approval expiring this budget year; pay District operating expenses; purchase equipment and vehicles; building maintenance, repair and remodeling projects.

The 2022 Referendum impact begins with the December 2022 tax bills. The 2022 Referendum continues the $820,000 of revenue from the 2014 Referendum, which is currently in tax bills and expires this year. This amount is “levy neutral” meaning taxes will not increase or decrease as a tax levy impact of the 2022 Referendum. The additional amount of $280,000 for four years would be a tax levy increase as compared to December 2021 tax bills. This increase is calculated as an estimated tax rate impact of $1.12 per $1,000 of property value. For Example: $1.12 X $100,000 property value = $112.
