Belleville Wildcat Football Alumni members were honored at Friday night's game against New Glarus-Monticello.

Friday night was the Belleville Wildcat Football Alumni Game. Fans honored the 1964-1970 Wildcat teams. Coaches Becker and Freitag were there and Coach Bartelt was represented by his kids, Ken and Polly Ann Bartelt.

All through the Belleville vs New Glarus game, Brian Lamboley read a number of "Fun Facts". Bart Morrick provided some of the Fun Facts that were announced during the game:

In 1960, Jan Bartelt and his wife and fellow teacher, Barbara, came to Belleville to teach history and physical education for the next 30 years. In addition to his teaching duties, Jan spent many years as the head Wildcat cross country and track & field coach. He was also assistant football coach, first with Darrel Dillman and then John Becker while in Belleville. Jan has the unique position to be the only football coach in Wildcat history to be a part of four consecutive championships, as he was on the coaching staff for the State Line League Champion Belleville Wildcats in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1965.

More than 1,500 students have played football over the past 93 years here in Belleville. And in that long time, only once did Belleville win four consecutive championships, 1962 through 1965. Over this four-year period, the Wildcats amassed a record of 29-3. This means that in the long history of Belleville football, only the Class of 1966 is able to say they were four-time champions – and in that class, only one player played all four years. Rick Stadelman is the only player in Wildcats history to be a part of four championship teams during his high school career – Rick you are one in 1,500! Wildcats Youth Football presented Rick with a Wildcats Football Alumni t-shirt to commemorate his unique position in Wildcats lore.

The year 2021 marks the first time since 1930 that Belleville and New Glarus-Monticello will face off two times in varsity football action in the same calendar year. On October 17, 1930, the Purgolders of Belleville and the Glarners in New Glarus played, with the Glarners winning 14-0. On Armistice Day, Tuesday, November 11th, 1930, the Glarners came to Belleville and defeated Belleville 12-7. Belleville was ahead 7-6 at the end of the 3rd quarter, but New Glarus scored as the game wound down. On May 7th of this year, in one of the craziest games ever in the long history of Belleville football, the Wildcats defeated the Glarner Knights 21-20 to finish the COVID Spring Small Conference season with a 6-1 record, and be co-champions of the league with Blackhawk.

On September 18th, 1964, Belleville defeated New Glarus 25-6. In the first quarter, Dale Anderson scored from 9 yards out to make the score 7-0 at the half. After a blocked punt, New Glarus scored on a quarterback sneak by Jim Disch to make the score 7-6. On the following drive, Ron Babler scampered for 52 yards and a Belleville touchdown. Belleville would score two more times in the 4th quarter, first on a pass from Rich Cotham to Gary Storm and then another rushing score by Ron Babler. Belleville would go on to win the 1964 State Line League Championship with a 7-1 record.

On September 24th, 1965, Belleville defeated New Glarus 14-7. Belleville scored both touchdowns on defense in the 2nd quarter. Larry Judd blocked a New Glarus punt that was picked up by Gene Short who raced five yards into the endzone to make the score 7-0. On the next drive, Bill Meyer intercepted a Dennis Marty pass and raced 40 yards for the Wildcats' second score. New Glarus would score late in the game on a pass from Marty to Rod Disch. Belleville would go on to win the State Line League Championship with an 8-0 record.

On September 30th, 1966, New Glarus defeated Belleville 20-12 before a large crowd at the Community Park. This loss prevented the Wildcats from winning an unprecedented 5th consecutive State Line League Championship. New Glarus opened the scoring with a 15-yard pass from Dennis Marty to Steve Marty. The Wildcats followed with Dale Anderson going 78 yards, and the score at halftime was 6-6. In the 3rd quarter, Belleville quarterback Rich Cotham was hit as he was about to throw, and the ball was scooped up by Kvamme who ran it in from the 35-yard line. New Glarus scored again when a Cotham pass was intercepted by Dave Owen who ran it in from the 33-yard line. Belleville finished the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown reception of Cotham to Jim Gibbons. New Glarus would go on to share the 1966 State Line League Championship with Juda who, interestingly, was defeated by Belleville 52-0, two weeks after the New Glarus game.

On October 6th, 1967, the Wildcats traveled to New Glarus and were defeated 7-6. New Glarus scored first on a 15-yard run by Mike Schneider and converted the extra point. The Wildcats later scored on a 3-yard run by Tom Sonnenburg, but the extra point failed.

On October 4th, 1968, Belleville and New Glarus faced off for Belleville's Homecoming game and the Wildcats won 19-0. Tom Sonnenburg scored from 5 yards out in the second quarter, but the extra point failed, and the Wildcats went into the bus at the half ahead 6-0. The second half opened as Don Freidig scored from 17 yards out on a pass from Tom Manion. Belleville ended the scoring when Larry Kosmeder intercepted a pass and returned it 27 yards into the endzone.

On October 10th, 1969, Belleville and New Glarus faced off for New Glarus' Homecoming game and the Wildcats won 10-8. A rain-soaked field limited the offense and the Wildcats scored their only touchdown following a blocked punt. Kevin Stoddard hit Larry Kosmeder on an 11-yard pass and then hit Gary Best for a 2-point conversion as the Wildcats took an early 8-0 lead. New Glarus then scored on a 3-yard touchdown by Wierwill, but the Knights failed to convert the extra point and the Wildcats led 8-6 at half. The third quarter opened with New Glarus forced to punt. Gary Best burst through the line and tackled the Knights punter in the end zone for a 10-6 Wildcat lead. With time running out, New Glarus forced Belleville to punt at the Wildcats 20. Belleville punter, Kevin Stoddard, took the snap and ran to the endzone for a deliberate safety, which allowed Belleville a free kick at the 20 as opposed to a punt attempt in a driving rain.

On October 16th, 1970, Belleville and New Glarus met for Belleville's Homecoming game and the game ended in a 0-0 tie. The Wildcats only gained two first downs to the Glarner Knights' 6. New Glarus gained 101 yards on the ground and 8 yards in the air while the Wildcats rushed for -12 and threw for 52. An interception by Richard Donahue at the 3-yard line late in the game stalled a Knights' drive and sealed the tie. An interesting fact: After this game, the Wildcats went on to win their next two to finish the season 5-2-2. The Wildcats then won their next 17 consecutive games. In 1971, they went 9-0, won the State Line League title, and were rated the #3 small school in the state. In 1972, they won their first 8 games of the season and were rated Wisconsin's #1 small school team before losing the season finale to Blackhawk. They shared the State Line League Championship and ended being the #6 in the small school rankings for the state of Wisconsin.
