On August 22, 2021, at around 12:18 p.m., the New Glarus Police Department received a complaint of a male subject that was hanging around the New Glarus Schools and acting very suspicious. Contact was made with the subject, and he was identified as Todd Heitkemper, 44, Burlington, Wisconsin. Upon checking for any wants and warrants, Heitkemper was listed on the National Sex Offender Registry and was holding an active warrant for his arrest from the State of Montana. However, the extradition for his arrest was limited to only west of the Mississippi River. Because of that, officers were not able to act on the warrants as Wisconsin was not included on the extraditable list of States.

On August 23rd, the New Glarus Police Department continued their investigation and contacted agencies in the State of Montana, including the Department of Justice in Montana. When those agencies were informed again that Heitkemper was in our community, they immediately started mobilizing their resources to change the warrants to include all fifty states.

Later, the State of Montana Department of Justice authorized and requested that the Felony Fugitive be taken into custody immediately if located.

On August 23rd, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Heitkemper was located at 1301 STH 69, New Glarus, and was taken into custody by the New Glarus Police Department without incident. Heitkemper was transported to the Green County Jail and is currently incarcerated at the Green County Jail awaiting extradition to the State of Montana to be held accountable for the felony crimes committed in the State of Montana.

Per the Green County District Attorney's Office, reports will be forwarded to their office for review of possible charges for Heitkemper not registering as a Sex Offender in the State of Wisconsin.
