Looking Back at "News of the Men In Service"
To the readers of this weekly compilation of New Glarus WWII Veterans: This is the last in a series that has run over the past year. To those readers who had a father or mother serve in the military, it is my hope that you have discovered some of the stories they didn’t relate to we, their children. They truly earned the name, “The Greatest Generation.”

Kenneth Hoesly Commander of Legion Post
At the July meeting of the Stuessy-Kuenzi Post of the American Legion, Kenneth H. Hoesly was elected Commander of the Post. Other officers elected are Gerald J. Disch, 1st Vice President; William F. Kuenzi, 2nd Vice President; Eugene F. Stuessy, Adjutant; Robert W. Strickler, Finance Officer; Ralph E. Mueller, Assistant Service Officer, Joseph Haegele, Historian, Quinton J. Ott, Chaplain; Royal W. Ziltner, Herbert T. Knobel, Leonard J. Bigler and Walter Ott, Color Bearers; and Bernard L. Staley, Sergeant-at-Arms. All are World War II veterans, except Jacob Bruni. Charles Kammer is the retiring Commander.
John Hauri Jr., who attended Badger Boys State at Ripon, gave an interesting talk about his stay there to the Legionnaires who were in session at the Shooting Park, with Fred Bigler as host.
Jacob Bruni also gave a talk on a recent County Council meeting. The County Council expects to enter a float in the New Glarus Centennial parade. The New Glarus Legion Post will conduct several refreshment stands at the celebration.
On July 18, the New Glarus members of the Legion are invited to attend a meeting at Monroe.
Ronald Tschudy Completes Service With U. S. Navy
Ronald Tschudy, Seaman First Class, is at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Tschudy, after being honorably discharged from the Navy at Great Lakes, Illinois, and in August 1945 left the states on the carrier U.S.S. Manila Bay.
Enlisting on May 11, 1945, he received his training at Great Lakes, Illinois, and in August 1945 left the states on the carrier U.S.S. Manila Bay. In September, the carrier reached the Marshall Islands, and on the 12th of that month Tschudy was transferred to a Fleet Tanker on which he went to the Gilbert and Caroline Islands.
On January 20th, they left for the states and reached San Francisco on February 4, where the ship was decommissioned. After a short leave at home late in February, Ronald reported again at Seattle, Washington, where he was placed on L.S.T. 1146. On May 28th, he submitted to minor surgery at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Long Beach, and on June 24th returned to the same ship and later that month was transferred to Camp Elliot, San Diego, California, and from there to Great Lakes for his discharge.
Tschudy expects to enter New Glarus High School in fall to complete his work there. Before enlisting he was employed at the Royal Blue Store at New Glarus.
