Vote YES for April 6 Bond Referendum for the New Glarus School District

March 4, 2021

Dear Editor,

We are writing as elected members of the New Glarus Board of Education to encourage district residents to vote YES in the April 6 bond referendum. We have been working hard to plan for the long-term future of your school district. Our plan includes constructing a new 4K-2 elementary school on land the school district purchased several years ago on the west end of the village; renovating the existing elementary school to ensure the building is a safe and productive learning environment; renovating and expanding the Tech Ed/STEAM/Shop areas at the high and middle schools; and improving pedestrian safety, traffic flow and site circulation at all schools.

Our decision to present these four projects to district voters is based on strong and compelling feedback we received from hundreds of district residents during two community surveys, one late last fall and one in the fall of 2019.

Why move forward with a $28.9 million referendum during the COVID-19 pandemic? After much thought and consideration, four main points stand out: our school district school population continues to grow; school district facilities continue to age; construction interest costs are at historic lows; and the district can pay for construction costs without increasing the current mill levy. And, most of those who responded to the school district survey last fall said they wanted the board to move forward despite challenges presented by COVID-19.

Want to learn more? The district has scheduled one remaining one-hour information session for March 18 at 6:30 p.m. Please email your referendum questions to: referendum@ngsd.k12.wi.us. The Zoom link for each session is available at http://www.ngsd.k12.wi.us/referendum.

Please vote on April 6 to make your voice heard. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

New Glarus Board of Education

Kari Morrison, President

Bill Oemichen, Vice President

Travis Zimmerman, Treasurer

Larry Stuessy, Clerk

Debra Fairbanks, Director

Jessica Geib, Director

Corrine Hendrickson, Director
