News of Men In Service

Sgt. Joe Gmur, son of Mrs. Charles Gehrig, has arrived from Okinawa on a 30-day furlough. He served as a barber in the Marine Corps and expects to receive his discharge soon.

Sgt. Emil Ziltner returned to his home here on Sunday having received his discharge from the U. S. Army.

Ofc. Dean Gmur has been here from Clinton, Iowa, where he is a patient at Schick General Hospital, to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gmur.

Pfc. Norman C. Myrland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Myrland, was discharged recently at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He has been in Europe.

Sgt. Robert Gill, son of Earl Gill, New Glarus, has received his discharge from the Army and is at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Ruby Best, Belleville.

Royal Ziltner, with the Army in the Pacific, has been promoted to Sergeant.

Corporal Paul L. Stuckey, son of Reverend Walter J. Stuckey, is with the Marine Corps at Tientsin, China.

Sergeant Harold Schultz left for Camp Campbell, Kentucky, where he is stationed. He visited his wife, the former Mary Ann Keppler, who is making here home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ruben Keppler.

Edward Scharer Home From Navy Service

Edward Scharer, Navy Lieutenant, has joined his family at Monroe after service in the Pacific area. He is home on terminal leave until March 3rd, after which he will be placed on inactive duty.

Mr. Sharer was principal of the New Glarus schools when he entered Navy duty in November 1943. He received training at Farragut Training Center, Idaho, Plattsburg, New York and Harvard University.

In January he left this country, served on shore duty for 5 months at Pearl Harbor. For the next six months he was assigned to a P. C. Patrol ship, which did escort duty. Places visited were the Philippines, Guam, and Japan. At the latter place, he enjoyed a shore leave and saw the effects of the bombing in the Tokyo area.

Sgt. Arthur Zweifel Home From Philippines

Staff Sergeant Arthur Zweifel received his discharge from the U. S. Army last week after 33 months of service, of which 28 months were served in the Pacific area.

Art entered service in April 1943, and received basic training at Camp Callen, California. In September 1943, he sailed from San Francisco and was sent to New Caledonia, where served 20 months as a member of the Military Police. He was then sent to the Philippines for 8 months, stopping off a few days at New Guinea.

During his stay overseas, Art met the following New Glarus people in service: Gerald Disch, Matt Solbraa, Walter Kruesi, Irma Klassy and also Dr. Palmer Kundert.

On his return, he left Manila December 29th arrived at San Francisco January 13th, and received his discharge at Camp McCoy on January 20th.
