Eat Well Before Donating Blood

December 10, 2020

Dear Editor and New Glarus Community,

Thank you for the great article in the December 3rd paper. It has already generated over 50 appointments for our December 30th drive! Our Holiday Drive goal is 81…why not 85?

Anyway, it is time to write a little note to remind everyone to eat healthy to keep your iron up so the blood sinks or whatever! As you all know, sugar cookies and fudge can lead us astray this time of the year, just as ice cream does on a very hot summers day.

Remember also to eat a great breakfast and consume plenty of water on the day of your donation. If you have not made your appointment as of yet, please do by either going in on the website http://www.redcross.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Please, wear a mask! Your temperature will be taken at the door. It will need to be under 99.5 for you to donate. I just made my appointment and the times are pretty wide open between 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., just to give you a heads up. That gives you plenty of time to eat a great lunch also (and, drink more water!)!

The need for blood donations is critical at this time as so many college and university students are home and not donating through the school systems as usual. Remember, every pint donated can help up to 3 people! Therefore our Holiday Drive could very well impact 243 lives! And we ALL know someone whose life has been saved in the past with blood transfusions!

Blessings and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!
