New Glarus Area EMS Holds Patriot Day Blood Drive

September 10, 2020

Sue Moen

Members of the New Glarus Area EMS were among the many people from the community who donated blood at the Patriot Day Blood Drive held September 5, 2020.

As September 11th draws near, we remember the lives of those that were taken and those that were spared on that horrific day in 2001. Our first responders, military personnel, and citizens of our nation have given much in the years that have passed since that terrible day. Your local EMS responders not only respond in your time of need, they also volunteer their time sponsoring and donating in the community they so proudly serve.

For the last couple of years, the New Glarus Area EMS has held the "Patriot Day" blood drive with the Red Cross. On Saturday, September 5, many members of our community and surrounding area donated life-saving blood at the 2020 Blood Drive, including almost half of the members of New Glarus Area EMS. Red Cross officials noted that all blood types were represented during the drive. This included rare types that can save the lives of infants. The blood collected had the potential to save 84 lives.

Because of COVID, appointments were required for all who wished to donate and the maximum number for the Patriot Day Drive was reached days before the event. Unfortunately, due to the need to social distance, we had to turn some donors away. Given this great interest, a second date has been reserved to donate blood at the New Glarus Area EMS Station. Make your appointment now for our Halloween Blood Drive on Saturday, October 31, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.!

Many thanks to all the members of New Glarus Area EMS - not only for the life-saving work they do every day in donating their time and talents - but also for stepping up and donating to help save lives as donors to the Red Cross.
