V-E Day in New Glarus is Observed Quietly
The news of the “unconditional surrender” of the German Army to the Allies, expected for several days and officially made by President Truman at eight o’clock Tuesday morning, brought little excitement to New Glarus.
Everyone stayed at their job, stores and factories remained open and school was held. At the close of the president’s speech, whistles were blown for a short time but everyone remained at the radios in their homes or places of business instead of gathering in the streets.
Flags flew at half-staff all day. Schools and business...
