MICHAEL A. STATZ

Michael A. Statz, age 77 of Belleville, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at the Hospice Community Center at the VA Medical Center in Madison, with family by his side. He was born on March 29, 1943, in Madison, WI, the son of Ollie and Kathleen (Blum) Statz.
Mike graduated from Mount Horeb High School in 1961 and then served in the United States Army as a medic and paratrooper in Germany until 1964. On June 5, 1965, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Nancy Aavang, at the St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Mount Horeb, and the couple celebrated 55 years together. Mike was an operating engineer; he worked for Findorff for almost 25 years and then DRM Crane Service in Lake Delton for eight years. He was a member in good standing of Operating Engineers Local 139 for over 53 years. Mike's proud moment was to see his grandson David follow in his footsteps. Mike was an avid sportsman; he shared his love of the outdoors with his children and grandchildren. He could tell many stories from fishing trips, deer hunts, and times spent at the cabin. Mike was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Belleville.
Mike is survived by his wife and caregiver, Nancy; sons, Randy (Mary) Statz, Jesse Statz, and Corey Statz; grandchildren, Carla Statz, Melinda (Cody) Bigler, Jamie Statz, and David Statz. He is further survived by his sisters, Judy (Phil) Loy, Jennifer (Dan) Curtain, and Joni (Chuck) Crave; sister-in-law, Carol Statz; and brother-in-law, Duane Aavang; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Tim Statz.
A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the St. James Chapel at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Belleville. Burial with military honors will be in the St. James Cemetery.
A public memorial mass will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank the staffs of the William S. Middleton and Milwaukee VA Medical Centers and the home healthcare workers for the kind and compassionate care given to Mike.
