On Thursday, February 20th, the Belleville Wildcats girls basketball team traveled to Waterloo for their last conference game against the Waterloo Pirates. The game was close from the start, with neither team having more than an 8-point lead at any time. The Wildcats went into the locker room at half-time with a 27-25 point lead, however due to a couple of timely 3-pointers made by Waterloo and a few costly mistakes by the Wildcats, they allowed the Pirates to secure the win with a 59-55 victory.
Leading scorers for the Wildcats were Callie Smith with 15 points and 15 rebounds, Sophia Grady with 10 points and was noted to have hit 100% from the free throw line nailing 5/5, and Mickey Stampfl adding 9 points to the Wildcat scoreboard.
Coach Pharo is sure his team will rebound and put up a good effort in their first playoff game on Tuesday against the Bulldogs.
The Wildcats finished their conference season in 2nd place in the Capitol South Conference and began the playoffs hosting the Boscobel Bulldogs on Tuesday, February 25th. Belleville is seeded #5 for the Regionals, while Boscobel is seeded #12. Should Belleville win, they will play at #4 seeded Luther on Friday, February 28th.
