Village of Monticello Needs to Address Water Concerns

February 13, 2020

The Monticello Village Board met on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. All board members were in attendance.

During the section for hearings, public appearances and citizen comments, Bart Nies of Delta 3 spoke to the board about the updates for the Waste Water Treatment Plant. He told board members that the measures taken approved in June of 2018 put the Village in line with the cost estimate for the updates.

Nies reviewed the necessity to lower the phosphorous levels to meet state guidelines. He also spoke to the board about the need to reduce the amount of “clear water” that runs through the facility. Nies said that the village will need to reduce this by approximately 40%. The “clear water” can enter the system in a number of different ways, including homeowners who inadvertently have their sump pumps emptying into the sanitary sewers and cracks or breaks in sewer mains under roads.

Two other citizens who were on the agenda to speak about winter parking did not attend the meeting.

In the Public Safety Report, the board learned that the Monticello Police Department had spent over $4,000 in maintenance on their older squad car. It was reported that Monticello Police Chief Szvon Conway was looking at two vehicles to replace the older squad. The first is a Chevrolet Tahoe priced at $37,296.00, and the second is a Ford Hybrid Interceptor priced at $35,178. The Public Safety Committee instructed the Chief to do a more in depth inquiry about the Interceptor, including warranties on batteries, cold weather effects, as well as other issues and to report back to the Public Safety Committee. It was also noted in the Public Safety meeting minutes that there appeared to be $47,721.00 in the Police Outlay.

Also in Public Safety minutes, Chief Conway reported that the Police Department handled 1,571 incidents in 2019. Year to date (January 28, 2019) there has been 240 incidents that have been or are being handled.

The next Village Board meeting will be February 19, 2020, at 7:00 p.m., in the meeting room at Village Hall.
