Six members of the Sugar River Raiders wrestling team competed at the 2019 Lourdes On The Water Wrestling Classic last weekend at UW-Oshkosh. This is a very challenging 67-team tournament that allows the team to compete against schools they don't normally see during the regular course of the season.

"Despite not having a place winner, the Raiders who participated gained valuable experience. This tournament can place two really strong wrestlers against each other in the first and/or second round," explained Coach Pete Swenson. "Since we do not see many of these school through the year we have our guys go out as if every match is going to be their toughest. With our younger wrestlers, we look at how they are competing within the match, not winning or losing. We still have over half the season to go, so we will continue to tighten up our basics, but look to take steps in our technique."

In the 106 lb weight class, Samantha Peterson (2-10) lost by fall to Princeton's Isaiah Wagner in round one. Peterson received a bye in round two and in round three lost by fall to Brillion's Trenton Nicklaus.

Joe Quaglia (15-4) wrestled in the 132 lb weight class and scored 6 team points. In round one Quaglia received a bye and in round two won by decision over Tomahawk's Mason Evans. In round three, he lost by decision to Menomonee Falls' Ethan Pogorzelski and in round four lost to Piersson Czaplinski of Three Lakes.

Scoring 3 team points was Avery Lettman (2-8), who wrestles at 138 lbs. In round one he lost to Southern Door's Kyle Conard by fall and in round two Lettman won by fall over Pittsville's Hunter McDaniel. In round three, Lettman lost by decision to Reedsburg's Devin Judd.

Wrestling at 145 lbs was Brycen Schuhmacher (3-8). In round one, Schuhmacher lost by fall to Neil Bretl of Antigo. Schuhmacher received a bye in round two and in round three lost by fall to Manawa's Bryan Griffin.

Scoring 7 team points for Sugar River was Robert Chenoweth (13-6), wrestling at 152 lbs. In round one Chenoweth won by fall over Plymouth's Phil Miller and in round two he lost to Conner Seavers of Stevens Point. In round three Chenoweth won by fall over Collin Gajewski of Edgar and in round four lost to Wisconsin Lutheran's Benjamin Haakenson by decision.

Patrick Samon (1-8) wrestled in the 170 lb weight class. In round one Samon lost by fall to Antigo's Gideon Sass and had a bye for round two. Samon lost in round three to Pittsville's Jon Klamrowski.

On January 4th, the Raiders will head to Sauk Prairie for an invitational and on January 9th will host a conference meet against Cambridge, Waterloo and Marshall in Belleville.
