Former Swiss Embroidery Factory Demolished
October 31, 2019
On Friday, October 25, 2019, the former Upright Swiss Embroidery Factory was demolished. Started in 1925 by investors from the local area and Chicago, the Swiss-style embroidery factory struggled to succeed and closed temporarily in 1932. In 1935, Swiss immigrant Arnold Wieser took over the factory and developed it into a unique enterprise that drew lots of attention to the village. The building, which featured pressed brick from Ohio and was trimmed with Bedford stones, was finished in just six weeks and three days after breaking ground on October 13, 1924. In 1960 the retail showroom and sales room on Highway 69 was built, with an addition added in 1970, and in 1972, a 70x100 foot addition was added to the factory.
