Green County Raises More Than $18,000 for Alzheimer's Disease

More than 140 people stepped forward to give hope to locals living with Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia at the 18th annual Green County Alzheimer's Walk on September 7, 2019. The event at Behring Senior Center in Monroe raised more than $18,700 to support local programs and services for people with Alzheimer's or other Dementia and their caregivers.
The fundraiser will continue to increase as event totals are calculated. Online donations can be accepted until mid-November at http://www.alzwisc.org. The annual Alzheimer's Walk is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Alzheimer's & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin (ADAW).
Local resident Joan Kamholz was the honorary chair of the event. Kamholz and her family cared for her dad, David, until his death on May 15, 2019. She says that by being at the walk she could, "help others going through this journey with loved ones" and honor the life of her father. When tough times arose, she would remind others that, "it's a disease, don't get mad at your loved one, they can't control it."
Joan is heavily bound to the Green County community. She grew up and retired in the town of Juda, where she served as a deputy sheriff for several years. Though she is currently retired from the position, her devotion towards others continues as she still works part-time for the sheriff's office.
Proceeds at the event will support programs for local families affected by Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementia. ADAW offers free family and caregiver education programs, along with several early-stage programs. ADAW also hosts legal and financial planning seminars for seniors. All programs are always free. Teams raising the most money were: Pleasant View in 1st place, followed closely by Mimi's Team. Teams with the most walkers were: 1st place the Kamholz Klan, and, tied for 2nd place, Aster Assisted Living and Colony Brands. The family teams raising the most money were Ed's Super Team in 1st place and Kamholz Klan in 2nd place.
Sponsors of this year's walk included Azura Memory Care, Klondike Cheese-Odyssey Brands, Bailey's Run Vineyard & Winery, The Bank of New Glarus and Sugar River Bank Branches, Colony Brands, Mimi's Team, Monroe Clinic, and New Glarus Brewing Company.
