Marie Slotten of Saline, Michigan, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2019, at the University of Michigan Hospital after suffering a stroke on June 14, 2019. Born Katherine Marie Streiff in New Glarus, Wisconsin, on August 26, 1931, Marie was the sixth of seven children to Katherine (Figi) and Melvin Streiff.

When she was 15-years-old she met the love of her life, Eugene Slotten, whom she married on June 11, 1950. After Gene received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Wisconsin, he was hired by the Bendix Corporation, and Marie and Gene moved to South Bend, IN. In 1952, they were transferred to York, PA, where they started their family and lived for 17 years. Marie (and Gene) made many lifelong friendships in York through their neighborhood, church, bowling, golf and their older boys' (Randy and Tom) activities.

In 1969, another Bendix transfer brought Marie and her family to Ann Arbor, MI. Again, Marie (and Gene) made many, many lifelong friendships through their neighborhood, church, bowling, golf and now all four of their boys' (now including Cresson and Joel) various activities. As her boys got older, Marie decided to work outside the home and became a bookkeeper for Nicholson Honda in downtown Ann Arbor, and later worked at the Murphy's Landing store in Kerrytown. Then she began to work at Georgetown Gifts in the Georgetown Mall near her home. For more than two decades, Marie worked at the store, but spent much of her time in the US Postal Station there. Here she served countless customers, many becoming "her regulars." She and Gene also ushered at Hill Auditorium and Power Center events for several years. In 2012, Marie moved from her home in Ann Arbor into Brecon Village senior community in Saline, where she soon gained the nickname "the Mayor of Brecon Village."

Even though she moved from Wisconsin and spent over 50 years in Michigan, Marie never lost her Dairyland roots. She brought the family "back home" every summer. She would cheer for her kids' schools, unless of course they played the Badgers! And she passed along her love of the Green Bay Packers to three generations of Slottens!

The love of her life, Gene Slotten, preceded her in death on September 22, 2013.

Marie is survived by her four sons, Randall (Jan) Slotten, Thomas (Bob Doucette) Slotten, Cresson (Karen) Slotten, and Joel (Kathleen) Slotten; nine grandchildren, Kirsten (John) Soltis, Kendra Randolph, Ryan Faulkner, CJ Slotten, Alex (Cathy) Slotten, Chris Slotten, Jenna Slotten, Jon Slotten and Katie Slotten; seven great-grandchildren, Thomas, Anna, Jillian, Evelyn, Juniper, Derek and Ava; her brother, Steve (Sharon) Streiff; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Services to celebrate and remember Marie's life will be held on Friday, August 2, 2019, at 7:30 p.m., at Swiss UCC Church, 18 5th Avenue, New Glarus, WI; on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at Bethlehem UCC Church, 423 South 4th Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI, with a visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. and service at 11:30 a.m.; and, Friday, August 9, 2019, at Brecon Village, 200 Brecon Drive, Saline, MI, at 1:30 p.m.

Memorial gifts can be made to Bethlehem UCC for the Habitat for Humanity Outreach Program in Marie's name.

She always took an interest in you as an individual. Whether you were visiting her church for the first time, a frequent customer at the post office, or a friend of one of her family members, she wanted to get to know you for who you were, and to welcome you into her circle of family and friends, which was always growing in size. Once you met her, she remembered you...and you remembered her.
