October 25, 2018
The Sugar River Raiders soccer team won against Lakeside Lutheran on October 15, 2018, 3-0.
"Tough final conference game. Both teams played hard and physical. Jack Gentilli started the game off with a beautiful outside of the 18-yard box shot. Sugar River lead 1-0 at halftime," explains Coach Kyle Webber. "Around the 78th minute, Jaden Kreklow beat a defender down the endline and slotted a beautiful pass to Gentilli for the finish. Connor DeLorme finished the scoring with a nicely taken PK after a handball in the box was called. Sugar River ends their conference game with a perfect 9-0-0 record."
Julian Lutz had two saves at GK, while Jaden Kreklow had one.
With the win over Lakeside Lutheran, the team, seeded #4, played in a Divisional 3, Sectional 3 WIAA tournament game against #13 seed Mauston at Reddan Soccer Park in Verona. The Raiders shut out Mauston, 3-0.
"Great first round of the playoffs for the Raiders," said Webber. "Sugar River dominated most of the possession and was able to slot passes into goal scoring positions. Breckin Faber finished two slotted passes by Jaden Kreklow to help give the Raiders a two goal lead. Justin Knoebl hit a sensational shot from outside the 18 into the upper corner of the goal for the third goal. Sugar River had a tenacious defense that kept Mauston out of their half of the field. A strong performance by the Raiders."
With that win, the team moved on to face the #5 Platteville/Lancaster team on October 20th at Reddan Soccer Park. Platteville/Lancaster had defeated Whitewater in overtime on October 18th.
In what Coach Webber declared a "strong performance," the Raiders defeated the Platteville/Lancaster team, 3-0, to become Regional Champs.
