Edelweiss Chalet Country Club Celebrates 50 years
August 16, 2018
Edelweiss Chalet Country Club is celebrating an important milestone. In 1968, the golf course opened to the public for the first time. At that time, it was a 9-hole course. According to John Thompson, the golf course came about after a group got together and decided that New Glarus needed a recreation facility to enhance the quality of life for area residents, as well as bring in visitors. Over 200 people donated $100 each to make the course possible. He also noted that some of the original donors were not golfers, just people who interested in improving the area. Land that had Morry Marty's farm was purchased and construction began. Thompson added that much of the labor and equipment needed to build the course was donated.
In 1990, another 9-hole course was added. The now 18-hole course has been designed and maintained to accommodate players of all skill and patience levels, and features the rolling hills, mature landscape and the beautiful views that have made New Glarus a favorite place to visit for tourists.
In 1994 the original club house was replaced with a more modern facility. Currently the club house is approximately 9,000 square feet and has become a popular venue for meetings, reunions and holiday parties, as well as weddings and receptions. The club house dining room seats up to 300 guests and features large windows displaying amazing views across the countryside. The outdoor patio also has expansive views and seats up to 60 guests. Edelweiss also has a full-service golf shop, as well as a bar and locker rooms with showers for both men and women.
In the last few years many golf courses have closed, however Jeff Ellingson, General Manager and PGA Golf Professional, said that Edelweiss Chalet Country Club is doing well. He added that they were grateful for the support of the community.
