Robert C. Gerber, age 89 of Blue Mounds, WI, passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at his home with family at his side. He was born on July 18, 1928, to Harold and Justine (Gruchow) Gerber in Montevideo, Minnesota.
He attended Mount Horeb High School and joined the U.S. Navy during World War II in order to provide for his mother and siblings. Bob was an entrepreneur, starting his first business hauling milk cans from the farmers to Ryser Brothers Cheese Plant in Mount Horeb. He sold his milk route and started Gerber Farm Service, Inc., acquired a trucking and excavating business, and developed the Blue Mounds M.H. Community.
In 1972, he learned to hop polka and started teaching hop polka at Club 18. Because of his love for dancing, he attended and participated in many Polka Fests in the Midwest. He purchased an orange GMC motor home, which he named "Gimme." He later purchased a Prevost coach and enjoyed taking family and friends to polka fests, family trips and NASCAR.
He was a member of the West Blue Mounds Lutheran Church, the Mount Horeb Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Mount Horeb Lions Club and served as the Village of Blue Mounds President and Board Member. Bob also earned his pilot's license and was a member of the Mount Horeb Flying Club.
He is survived by his children, Vicky (Jerry) Lino of Verona, Deb (Gary) Frisch of Mount Horeb, Nancy Gerber of Canada, Sue (Dave) Klagos of Waunakee; and the love of his life, Pam Venden, Blue Mounds. He is also survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, Chuck Gerber of Middleton, Linda (Charlie) Pater of Michigan; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Jeffery and David Gerber; daughter, Judy Gerber; two sisters, Pat Legler and Betty Domine; and a brother, Peter Gerber.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at the West Blue Mounds Lutheran Church with Pastor Jerry Tews officiating, and with military honors. Visitation was from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at the Ellestad Camacho Funeral Home, 500 N. 8th Street, Mount Horeb, WI.
A private burial service will be held at a later date.
