2017, The Year in Review: August through October for Monticello

Wisconsin Farm to Table announced the fourth annual Farm to Table Dinner at Voegeli Farms, Inc., on Saturday, August 19th.

The Monticello Lions Club has very generously donated $11,000 to the Village of Monticello towards the newly purchased pool heater.  Village Trustee Rene Nicholson received a check from Monticello Lions Club member Linn Lederman for $5,500; the remaining amount will be donated next summer.  

The Monticello FFA Chapter and its members worked together with the Monticello FFA Alumni in coordinating and hosting the Annual Fish Boil on the Friday evening, July 7th, as a part of the Monticello Homecoming festivities.  

This event serves approximately 600 people and is a big kick-off to the Homecoming Weekend.

The kids at the Monticello Public Library read to earn books to send to Africa this summer.  Last Thursday, Carolyn Seaver and her husband, Doug, loaded a van to take the books to Atlanta, GA, where they will be sorted in the Books For Africa warehouse to be sent to Africa.  Thank you to all the kids who read, and to the people who donated money.

The Brodhead Covered Bridge Days Open Horse Show and Fun Speed Show was held recently.  The Grand Champion Halter was Kloie Huffman-Heins of Albany with Midwestern Design, and Reserve Champion Halter was Taylor Pfeuti of Monticello with Spanish Wrangler Style.

Monticello Lions Treasurer Nancy Elmer presented Monticello School District Administrator Allen Brokopp and School Principal Mark Gustafson with a check to be used to help any elementary school children with their school supplies or any other needs throughout the year.

Pastor Mary Gafner was honored on Sunday, August 27, at an Open House held at TnD’s Bar & Grill in Monticello. Pastor Gafner had announced her retirement and on that Sunday lead her final worship service at Washington Reformation Church. A large crowd of people were in attendance to celebrate her ministry and wish her well in retirement.

Mt. Pleasant-Perry Mutual Insurance welcomed Dave Gietzel to the staff of Agents affiliated with the Company.  Dave received the necessary training and accreditations to be fully licensed in Property and Casualty Lines of insurance.

Donald and Marlis Silver, Monticello, were honored at the 2017 Wisconsin State Fair for their Sesquicentennial Farm. The Sesquicentennial Farm Awards Program began in 1998 as part of the state’s sesquicentennial celebration.  The program honors families who have ha continuous ownership of their Wisconsin farm or home for 150 years or more.  For the past 20 years, Hillshire Farm of New London has sponsored the program.  Compeer Financial also sponsored the Awards Program this year.

The Monticello School District was chosen to receive $500 to support its Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative.  Monticello was selected from several schools that applied for funding across the state to help them jump-start and sustain healthy nutrition and physical activity improvements.  Wisconsin schools are eligible to receive up to $1,000 to help them increase awareness of and access to nutrient-rich foods and physical activity opportunities for students.  Funding for this competitive program is provided by the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board through Wisconsin’s dairy farmers.

On Thursday, September 14, 2017, the family of Vicki (Baumgartner) Evenson of Brodhead donated a family heirloom to be displayed in the Library of Zwingli UCC in Monticello, WI.  The Certificate is entirely in German, and would have been an early baptism in Zwingli Church history.  Zwingli became an organized church in 1887.  

Taylor Johnson, a 4th grader in Monticello School, placed 4th in the National Pedal Pull Championship at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. Taylor is the daughter of Joe and Denise Johnson.

The Badger State Archaeological Society held its 34th Annual Native American Indian Artifact show on Sunday, October 22, 2017.

Monticello’s Haunticello took place on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at the Monticello High School.  

Veterans George Wells – WWll; Emil Mike Rufener - Korea War; Walt Marty – WWll; James Jeremiason – Vietnam; Bill Haffele – Vietnam; and Michael “Gunner” Furgal – Vietnam, were wrapped in their Quilt of Valor by Sugar River Quilts of Valor at the Monroe Behring Senior Center at their monthly veteran breakfast on Wednesday, October 4, 2017.   

On Saturday, October 14, 2017, the Fall Color Car Cruise In memory of TJ Disch, took place, leaving the Monticello Fire Station around 11:30 a.m. All proceeds from the Fall Color Car Cruise go towards the Monticello Fire Department’s TJ Disch Scholarship Fund. This year the group raised approximately $3,800.  

The Monticello Fire Department honored the NGM Cross Country team on Saturday, October 21, 2017, with rides through New Glarus and Monticello.  The NGM Boys Cross Country team was runner up in sectional competition and qualified for the State Meet.
