Knights Score Big Win At Marshall

The New Glarus-Monticello Knights traveled to Marshall on Friday night. The Knights beat the Cardinals, 47-24.

“This was a huge win for our program,” said Coach Jeff Eichelkraut.  “Marshall is an excellent football program and for our guys to go up there and get a win is a big accomplishment, and I am proud of our guys.”

The Cardinals were first on the board with a field goal in the first, and on the Knights’ first offensive play they scored on a 65-yard hitch and lateral from QB Jared Carney to Cullen Brooks to Noah Zimmerman. At the end of the first, NGM was trailing by three but took the lead on a 3-yard run from Patrick Craker. Late in the second quarter with Marshall leading and driving for a score, Darris Schuett, in his first Varsity start, intercepted a pass and returned it for 32 yards. With just seconds left to play in the first half, Cullen Brooks scored on a 46-yard pass from Jared Carney. The Knights led at halftime, 21-17.

The Knights opened the scoring on the first play of the second half with a 59-yard pass from Carney to Cullen Brooks. Jared Carney scored the next points on a 1-yard run. Patrick Craker also scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run, and Nick Schult scored a TD on a 2-yard run to close out the game. NGM’s defense held Marshall to just one touchdown in the second half.

Jared Carney led the Knights in passing and was 5 of 7 for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Leading the Knights in rushing was Noah Zimmerman, with 136 yards on 8 carries and one touchdown. Patrick Craker rushed 16 times for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Leading the Knights in receiving yards was Cullen Brooks, with a total of 107 yards on 3 catches.

Defensively, Zach Murray recorded 11 tackles and 1/2 of a sack, while Jesse Tetner had 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Darris Schuett racked up nine tackles and one interception and Nathan Streiff added 8 tackles and an interception. Cole Walter had 8 tackles and .5 sacks.

Coming up next for the Knights is their Homecoming game against Iowa-Grant on Friday, September 29th. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
