Herman Burkhardt

Herman Burkhardt, age 90, passed away on Monday, September 18, 2017, at the William S. Middleton VA Memorial Hospital in Madison. He was born on November 27, 1926, in Monroe, WI, to his parents, Herman and Lily (Sonderegger) Burkhardt.

Herman entered the United States Navy during WWII in 1944, and served until 1947 aboard a Destroyer as a Frogman. Upon discharge from the Navy, he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal. On October 1, 1949, he was united in marriage to Esther Barthuly at the Church of Peace in Fond du Lac. After his naval service Herman made cheese and then was a bulk milk hauler for many years. He loved to play cards and was a member of the Sugar River Euchre League. Herman also enjoyed fishing with his sons and working in his yard.

Herman is survived by his sons, Terry (Marcia), Duane (Jenny), Kenneth (Denise), Brian (Tami) and Paul (Debi); grandchildren, Tim, Brad, Jamie, Tina, Dan, Amy, Jackie, Paul David, Ashley, Jessi and Nikki; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Esther; sister, Lilian Hoesly; and a great-granddaughter, Lily Anne.

Per Herman's wishes, private family services will be held. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Madison, WI.

Memorials are suggested to the Herman Burkhardt memorial.

The family would like to thank the staff of the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital CLC (hospice) for the kind and compassionate care given to Herman.
