Alan R. Freitag, age 85 of Verona, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at his home. He was born on August 10, 1932, at home in New Glarus, the son of Terrence and Frieda (Luchsinger) Freitag.

Al graduated from Monticello High School in 1950. Following high school he entered into the United States Navy and served for three years. On April 10, 1954, he was united in marriage to Jean Schuett at the E & R Church in New Glarus. After his military service, Al worked at Badger Ordnance, then Borden Dairy, and selling insurance. In the 1960s he purchased Creative Woodcrafts, which he operated for over 35 years. Al was a past president of the Wisconsin Builder's Association and was a member of the Madison Area Builder's Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing at his lake home "Tall Oaks" on Long Lake, making wine, Texas sized Manhattans, poker, golf, gardening, and snowmobiling. Al also was a Badger and Packer fan and raised St. Bernards with his wife, Jean.

Al is survived by his sister, Carolyne McNary; nephews, Steve McNary, Scott McNary, Dan (Linda) Freitag, and their children, Michael, Robbie, Katie, Hal (Shelly) Freitag, and their daughter, Abby, DJ (Kate) Schuett, and sons, Darris, Drew, and Declan; nieces, Stacey McNary, Kelly Iverson, Terri (Mike) Gill, and her daughter, Carrie (Pat) Mess, and grandson, Silas, Madelyn Martinez, and her sons, John and Michael; grandnieces, Molly and Laura Beecher. He is further survived by a sister-in-law, Molly Freitag; and special companion, Virginia Urness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; brother, Harold Freitag; sister, Marty Quest; nephew, AJ Schuett; and a niece, Susan Beecher.

A Memorial Service was held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home, 29 Sixth Avenue, New Glarus, WI, with a Celebration of Life to follow.
