Wildcats Softball Loses Two on the Road
May 11, 2017
On May 4th, the Belleville softball team played at Cambridge, losing 1-11 in six innings.
“Belleville as a team had five errors,” said Coach Connie Wunschel. “There were two passed balls the catcher Ella Campbell, and we had only five hits. We were putting the ball in play, but they just weren’t hard enough to get through. We had a great opportunity to change the outcome of the game in the second – Bailey Legler led off with a walk, moving to 2nd on a passed ball. Brianna Halverson then had a good base hit up the middle to move Bailey to 3rd but we couldn’t get anything together after that to push runs across. In the fifth we scored our lone run. With two outs and Alli Kowalski on 1st, Bailey Legler hit a very good shot to right field to score Alli all the way from first base.”
Of the team’s five hits, Bailey Legler had two, with one being a double.
Maddie Weber started as pitcher, giving up eight runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking two. Cassidy Heller took over in the fourth inning, allowing four hits and three runs, two of which were earned.
On May 5th, the Wildcats played at Lakeside Lutheran. They lost, 1-2.
“In the top of the third, just before that fourth inning, we had a super good chance to score,” explains Wunschel. “Maddie Weber ripped a base hit down 3rd base line to get on base. Next batter got out, which brought Alli to bat but she grounded to shortstop to force Maddie out for the second out. Cassidy then had a shot up the middle, followed by Jillian Michaels with another hit to left to load the bases, but we couldn’t pull the trigger on our next at bat. Behind 0-1 going into the top of the sixth, Jillian led of with a solo home run over the fence to tie the game!!! I though this might loosen up our batters, but we could only manage one more hit in the game after that.”
Cassidy Heller went 2-4 at bat, and Jillian Michaels went 2-4 with a home run. Callie Everson, Leah Blask, Alli Kowalski and Maddie Weber had one hit apiece.
Maddie Weber pitched the entire game, taking the tough loss. She struck out eight and gave up one earned run.
“Hard one to lose, but it was a very good ball game, and we can learn from it,” finished Wunschel.
On May 7th, the team hosted Lake Mills before headed to Marshall on Tuesday, then on to Columbus on Thursday and they will host Waterloo on Friday.
