Library Location Once Again A Discussion at New Glarus Village Board Meeting
May 11, 2017
The New Glarus Village Board met on Tuesday, May 2, in the Village Hall Board Room.
During the Public Appearances and Citizen Comments section, Eric Spanton told the board that he did not feel that a library should be located in Glarner Park. He also requested a binding referendum on the question of a new library and to allow everyone to vote on a location.
John Matthews and Bill Bacon also spoke, saying that the Veteran’s Memorial is hallowed ground containing the names of local service members. There are plans to add a memorial for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. Bacon also told the board that the veterans are looking possibly placing a helicopter, tank, and/or fighter plane in the park.
During the Administrator’s Report, Village Administrator Bryan Gadow reported that based on a request at an earlier meeting, he had contacted Fehr Graham for a cost estimate for preliminary site survey and design work for the placement of a ball field at Veteran’s Park.
Trustee Petra Streiff said she would like to table the item and set up a meeting with the veterans to discuss the issues. Following further discussion it was decided that a special meeting would be called within the next 2-3 weeks.
The board passed resolutions recognizing:
Municipal Clerks Week, May 7-13;
The month of May as Historic Preservation Month;
National Police Week, May 15-21;
National Small Business Week, April 30-May 6;
National Travel and Tourism Week, May 7-13;
Drinking Water Week, May 7-13;
Economic Development Week, May 8-13.
The board adjourned at approximately 7:30 p.m. The next regular New Glarus Village Board is scheduled for May 16, 2017, at 7:00 p.m.
