On Monday, April 10, 2017, the Friends of the Library held a book giveaway for all the students at the New Glarus Elementary School.

The project was coordinated with the Elementary School librarian, Katelyn Hansen. Each of the classes had an opportunity to come with their teachers to the hallway outside the school library to look over their choices of a wide variety of fiction types or science or others written for all age levels. One I liked was Dirty Rotten Pirates that had bite-sized facts, illustrated with some humor, about the life of a pirate that shows it was far from a glamorous life.

Each student could choose a book they liked. For some, it was a matter of paging through several possibilities before choosing. For others, there were whispered consultations with nearby classmates as they scanned the possibilities laid out along the three long tables.

While Visions has done a similar project each year, this is the first time the Friends of the Library has done a project like this. The money was raised at the Friends' annual book sale, which has been supported in a large way by the community very successfully last Fall. This project enables students to have their own books to keep at home to read.
