ALFRED W. UFKEN

Alfred W. Ufken, age 89 of New Glarus, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at his home. He was born on September 12, 1927, to his parents, Albert and Dora (Siegenthaler) Ufken at Marshall, MN.
Alfred graduated from Juda High School in 1945. He entered the U.S. Army in 1951, and served as a tank commander in the 1st Armored Division at Fort Hood, TX. Alfred also served overseas in Japan, and witnessed one of the atomic bomb tests in Nevada. On July 7, 1951, he was united in marriage to Carla Lewis at Gatesville, TX. Following his discharge from the Army in 1953, Alfred and Carla farmed south of Monroe and in the New Glarus area. Alfred raised Registered Arabians and Registered Yorkshire and Wattle hogs, many of which were sold into Canada. He also worked in construction with his uncle, Herman Siegenthaler. After retiring from farming, Alfred worked at the New Glarus Lumber Company. He was a member of the Stuessy-Kuenzi American Legion Post #141 and AmVets Post #69 in New Glarus. Alfred was a tireless worker and would fix anything that needed mending and he was proud to have built a new home for Carla and himself. He loved his family and enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Alfred is survived by his wife, Carla; children, Debra Ufken, David (Dorothy) Ufken, Larry Ufken, Linda (Dan) Stolts, and Wayne Ufken. He is further survived by his grandchildren, Melanie (Jeff) Judd, Alen Zweifel, Andrea (Sheena) Hirschfield, Tonya (Muhammed) Ufken, and A.J. Ufken; great-grandchildren, Jerrod, Ashley, and Allyson Judd, Jacob and Alexander Zweifel, and Ayaan, Atiya, and Ibraheem Aga.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dan; brothers, Eugene and Earl; sister, Joann Craft; sister-in-law, Vaughn Ufken; and brothers-in-law, Emil Pillath and Erwin Rufener.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, April 10, 2017, at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home, 29 6th Avenue, New Glarus, WI, with Rev. Sara Rabe officiating with burial to follow in the Swiss Church Cemetery, New Glarus.
Relatives and friends called from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home, 29 6th Avenue, New Glarus, WI.
A memorial fund has been established.
