High on some outdoors enthusiasts lists is searching and finding shed antlers.  Yes, deer have antlers, not horns.

Antlers drop annually and regrow during the summer.  The old antlers drop as early as December, sometimes as late as April.  They can be found anyplace a buck frequents.  If a deer trail crosses a gulch or fence, one or both antlers may drop when the deer jumps the obstacle if the time is right.  Once found, try to determine if the shed is from the right or left side. Sometimes rodents, squirrels and smaller animals, will gnaw on the boney material.

Most finds are used as decorations; a few are fashioned into knife handles, lamps and even cabinet pulls.
