Monticello Red Cross Blood Drive A Success

March 16, 2017

Dear Editor,

The Red Cross Blood Drive in Monticello was held on Friday afternoon, February 24th, at the Zwingli Church. Forty-two people came to donate blood, which will be used to help other folks who need it to live well and be healthy. There were a total of 38 units of blood collected at this drive.

The youngest donor, and a first-time donor, was a sixteen-year-old from Monticello. His mother came with him to sign for parental consent and also brought cookies for the canteen! Thank you to the Blum family for giving so much time and effort to the cause.

Set-up and break-down of the site can be a time-consuming task. Fortunately, the Monticello Lions had help from Lance Smith and the members of the Monticello Honor Society. Mr. Collin’s math students also helped, so the job was done in record time. Thank you to all, young and old, for lifting, folding, and carrying the furniture and supplies.

The canteen was well-supplied, thanks to donations from local sources and also to the hard work of Donna Ferguson, Lucille Elmer, and Rosemary Avery. Subway of New Glarus donated sub sandwiches and cheese was supplied by Swiss Heritage Cheese and Colony Brands. Fresh-baked cookies were donated by Citgo in Monticello, and they were delicious! When picking up the cookies that morning, Karen Brugger also was given a gift of boxes of Girl Scout cookies for the blood drive. Random acts of kindness can happen anywhere. The Monticello Lions Club donated milk and coffee and crackers, which went well with the sausage and jerky from Jack Links of New Glarus. The icing on the cake was the “Pint for a Pint” coupons that donors received from Culver’s of New Glarus.

We want to thank everyone who helped to make this blood drive a success. Thanks especially to all who donated blood. In the course of a lifetime, each of us will probably know someone whose life will be improved by your gift.

With Sincere Appreciation,

The Monticello Blood Drive Committee
