Senior John Chenoweth, New Glarus, is shown winning his third round match at the WIAA D2 Sectional at Richland Center on Saturday.  He placed fourth and will be an alternate for the State Tournament.

Two Sugar River wrestlers, John Chenoweth and Max Gerner, competed at the WIAA Division II Sectional in Richland Center on Saturday, February 18th.

"Max battled through arguably the toughest sectional bracket in the state, which included the top four ranked wrestlers in the 126 pound weight class," said Coach Peter Swenson.  "Max came up short this year going 0-2, but gained valuable experience that he will be able to use for next season."

Junior Max Gerner, Belleville, is shown at the start of his first match at the WIAA D2 Sectional at Richland Center on Saturday.

"John Chenoweth started his day with a forfeit, due to the fact that his opponent did not pass the skin check at weigh ins," continued Swenson.  "In the second round John wrestled a returning state qualifier.  Though he fought hard he came up short by giving up a pin.  John bounced back in the third round with a major decision win, 15-5, over an opponent from Jefferson.  Going for third, and a trip to state, John would have to go through a tough Monroe wrestler.  It was a hard fought match by both."

Chenoweth lost 8-3, placing 4th.  He is the first alternate to the state tournament at 138 if someone from his bracket becomes sick or injured.

"The 2016-2017 wrestling season was a great success.  Many positives came out from this season and many, many more are sure to come in the future," concluded Swenson.  "Thank you to all the support from friends and family throughout the season.  Go Raiders!!"
